APPRECIATING THE GIFT OF LIFE

Here’s a story that offers a simple but powerful reminder.

A group of scientists, having discovered the secrets of cloning, decided to hold a conference with God. They wanted to explain that God was no longer needed. After all, they said, humanity had now learned how to create life itself.

So the top scientists gathered and invited God to attend the conference.

God listened and then said, “Explain this to me.”

The scientists replied, “We now know how to make life out of dust ourselves.”

God said, “Well then, go ahead and show me.”

One of the scientists reached down to pick up some dirt.

God stopped him and said, “Uh-uh. Get your own dirt.”

The Teaching

I love this story because it gently reminds us how easy it is to forget the deeper sources of life and possibility.

In our achievements, our work, and our daily responsibilities, we sometimes begin to feel that everything we have belongs entirely to us. But when we pause and look more closely, much of what we experience in life is truly a gift.

Our relationships. Our health. Our ability to think, learn, and create. Even the simple experience of being alive today.

Recognizing this doesn’t diminish our effort or responsibility. Instead, it invites a deeper sense of appreciation for the opportunities we are given. When we approach life with that spirit of gratitude, something shifts. We begin to see our work, our relationships, and our daily experiences not only as obligations, but as meaningful parts of a life that is constantly unfolding.

Reflection

Today, consider taking a moment to appreciate what is already present in your life. The people around you. The experiences that have shaped you. The possibilities that still lie ahead. Sometimes the greatest abundance begins not with acquiring more, but with recognizing the value of what is already here.
